Help children learn about counting and numbers with this easy method. I made these farm animal ten frame math cards because I believe that ten frame cards are the answer to helping children understand numbers and counting, instead of just memorization.
Imagine this! Your child or student looks at the card with seven ducks. Instantly, the child knows that there are seven ducks, without looking at the number or counting the ducks! This math skill is known as subitizing, and it can completely revolutionize how children learn math, setting them up for success with addition, subtraction, and more!
Don’t waste any time on rote memorization! That’s something I was told a long time ago, and I followed that advice.
But I didn’t know what to do instead!
Now, I know that ten frames are the perfect solution for helping children truly understand numbers and quantity.

How to Use Ten Frame Cards
There are numerous ways that you can use ten frame cards! Their purpose is to help children understand numbers as groups.
This will help set the stage for math success in elementary school!
Let children explore them and become familiar with them. Then help children notice the trends of a ten frame card. If the entire top row is filled, that means there are five. And it always means that!
Likely, children will already be able to figure out numbers 1-3 (but it’s OK if they need help with that too).
Then point out that we know what four is because there is one empty spot at the top of the ten frame. Once they have numbers 1-5 mastered, then you can use these strategies for 6-10.
Anytime the entire ten frame is full, that means there are 10. This will be such an amazing tool to help children learn to count by 5s and 10s. Then they will be able to associate things such as 5 +2 = 7.
Ten frames are absolutely brilliant, and I am so thankful for the person who figured them out!
Farm Animal Ten Frame Cards
To make your own ten frame cards, I made this super simple! All you have to do is print them out and cut them out!
If for any reason yours don’t print properly, use legal sized paper. That will fix it right away.
I recommend printing them out onto cardstock or laminating them! I love my laminator and buy these refills.
Use them in a math center or you can hang them on the wall somewhere. Do whatever works best for you! I’d love to hear how you use them!
