Your kids will love this rainbow name tracing activity. It’s a fun and colorful way for preschoolers to learn their name while developing fine motor skills!
Spring is the perfect time for all things rainbow. So when I wanted to do a name activity with my three-year old, I figured I would add a rainbow spin to it.
This is a great way for young children to become familiar with their name and explore the letters in it. They can talk about the letters they see in their name and maybe even the sounds they make. Because they are exploring the shape of each letter while tracing it, it is also a wonderful pre-writing activity.
If you are working on letter formation, this tactile Montessori letter formation book has been one of our favorites!
Peeling the dot stickers off the backing and placing them down on the lines works on those small hand muscles that are necessary for developing fine motor skills.
My (almost) six-year-old even wanted to join in. He loved decorating his name with the bright, colorful stickers and couldn’t wait to hang it up on the wall in our playroom. So this will definitely span a large range of ages and abilities.
Rainbow Name Tracing Activity
Supplies Needed:
- Rainbow Dot Stickers
- White 12 x 18 inch construction paper
- Black marker
Directions:
- Write each name on a piece of 12 x 18 inch construction paper.
- Give each child a sheet of rainbow dot stickers.
My 6-year-old knew what I meant when I told him he could trace the letters with the stickers, but I briefly explained and modeled it for my 3-year-old. She caught right on and started placing them on the y in her name.
My son went from beginning to end tracing through each letter in his name in order. My daughter, on the other hand, placed stickers randomly – often switching from letter to letter with no rhyme or reason. This is totally fine!
All that mattered to me was that she was exploring her name and the letters in it. I would never force her to do it a specific way. I am just happy to see her enjoying the activity and getting lots of awesome fine motor practice!
We all loved how they turned out! The bright colors added lots of cheer to our playroom and remind us that spring is on the way!
