Fun and Simple Melted Snowman Sensory Activity

Kids love the chance to play in the snow, but they don’t always love the cold that goes with it. This winter sensory activity will give kids a chance to play with a “melted snowman” in the comfort of a warm classroom!

Supplies for Melted Snowman Sensory Activity

• White shaving cream
• Ping pong balls
• Craft foam
• Googly eyes
• Buttons
• Plastic bin

How to Put Together a Melted Snowman Sensory Activity

This bin was a huge hit! We used basic supplies and made a melted snowman that the kids could play with in the comfort of their own classroom.

We started off by spraying shaving cream into a plastic bin. The dollar store is a great place to find shaving cream for a great deal. My four-year-old offered to spray our “melted snow” (a.k.a. shaving cream) for me. There’s something strangely satisfying about making big, fluffy mountains of foam in the bin. It’s irresistible to kids (and makes for great fine motor work!). We also added white ping pong balls to be pretend snowballs.

We topped off our faux-snow with craft foam cut into the shape of a carrot nose and a black hat. Then we added googly eyes and buttons.

My kids couldn’t wait to dig in and try to put the snowman back together again! They quickly realized that our melted snow doesn’t form into balls like regular snow would, but that didn’t stop them from trying!

We eventually added a pair of scissor scoops into the mix, which was fun for finding the ping pong snowballs.

This simple bin promotes development in several different areas in a fun and engaging way!

While kids play, they are working on fine motor skills (pressing the shaving cream button, pinching small buttons and googly eyes), beginner scissor skills (with the scissor scoopers), visual discrimination skills (as they look for hidden ping pong balls), and sensory stimulation (as they play with the smooth texture of the shaving cream).

Note: Have a bucket of water (or a sink) close by so kids can transition from this activity to another without mess.
